Feeding

There's good news and there's bad news. The bad news is that you have just supplied the local insects with the best place in the world to breed - a more or less stagnant pond near a house full of humans. Mosquitoes are going to love that! The good news is that your goldfish will love it even more. Those mosquitoes and their larvae will never make it out alive. Many local insects will use your pond for living and breeding purposes. But don't worry, if they do use your pond, your fish will be supplied with an excellent food source and a tasty treat supplied by Mother Nature herself.

The feeding instructions remain the same as for house-kept fish, only more so. In the late summer and autumn you should feed your pond fish three times a day if possible, and you should be feeding them high-carbohydrate foods. It's not twice as important to do this for pond fish because they will not feed that much in the winter months - nor should they. The purpose of fattening them up is so that they can winter properly.

In the winter months, if they can, goldfish will root in the mud for warmth and do very little. The cold temperatures will keep them from moving around too much. You should feed them once a day and only enough for five minutes. Don't overfeed them in the winter or in the spring, or you will have fat, lazy goldfish. If winter feeding is done properly, the fish will be heady and active in the spring with thoughts of Vamour!
