How to Feed Your Goldfish |
The biggest problem when feeding goldfish is that they will eat to the point of bursting. They are gluttons, and that's the nicest thing that can be said about their, table manners. Their food intake must be controlled. It is best to feed goldfish about as much as they can eat in a five-minute time period It's best to do this twice a day, morning and night, and always in the same spot.
To begin, put some flake food on the water and let them eat. lf they finish all or most of it before the five minutes is up, add a little more and a little more as best you can judge until you feel that they have had enough. It's the same thing with live, freeze-dried or table food. It's that easy.
If you go away for a weekend, don't worry about feeding the fish. They can last up to three weeks without being fed. You should not abuse them because of this; however, weekend trips shouldn't cause you too much worry.
Rules for Feeding Goldfish
1. Only feed them what they can eat in five minutes' time.
2. Feed them at the same time every day, once in the morning, once at night.
3. Always feed them at the same spot in the tank.
4. Don't overfeed the fish, no matter how humane you think you are being. More goldfish die, especially older ones, from overeating than from anything else.
Sample Diet
Following is a sample diet for a 30-day period. This is not hard and fast, but is merely suggested as a way for you to gauge how you might want to vary their diet. Things can be substituted, of course, but you must make sure to balance one group with another.
You need not attempt to feed every different kind of food to your goldfish. If you buy any kind of worms or cultivate anything on your own, that month or two will have a steady diet of that particular kind of food. In the diet below, I have supposed that I have cultivated my own brine shrimp and earthworms. Along with dried food as the staple, I will attempt to mix in a few vegetables and a few more easily gotten proteins. Of course, any foods might be substituted, and I am only showing this to try to provide beginners with a possible scenario.
