Pondkeeping - Plants

For the outdoor goldfish enthusiast, the plants I recommend are water hyacinth and duckweed; crystalwort is also good.

The other plant important in ponds is the water lily. Water lilies don't do well in moving water. They should be packed in a bucket with firm but not hard-packed dirt. Place large gravel on top of the dirt to weigh down the plant. Fill the bucket with water after the lilies have been planted and then place the bucket at the center of the pond. Water lilies are very hardy and can be left out all year as long as there is water in the pond, even if it freezes. Just make sure there are no fish in there if it freezes.

If you want to plant elodea or Vallisneria or any other anchored plant, you need to put a few inches of dirt on the entire pond floor. On top of that, you should probably put another couple of inches of sand or large gravel. However, don't use large gravel if you are going to stock the pond with Bubble-eye Goldfish. Make sure to rinse the sand or gravel thoroughly before placing it in the pond.
