Filtering

Goldfish can live in unfiltered ponds. Remember, if your pond is to be unfiltered, make sure that there is plenty of exposed water surface for sufficient aeration to take place. As long as the number of fish is not too great, your pond should be fine. If it is feasible and not too expensive, placing an aerator in an unfiltered pond is an excellent idea. It will keep the water moving and help prevent scum buildup, and it will oxygenate the water. Of course, if you can run an aerator to the pond, you should make an attempt to add a filter.

The best recommendation, of course, is to have a filtered pond. As with all filtering systems, there are two different kinds of filtering: biological and mechanical. Many are available at your local pet store. Consult with your pet store owner when beginning your pond and let him or her help you pick out a strong and powerful filter. These tend to be larger and more industrial looking than those used by the indoor hobbyist, and they tend to be more expensive, but don't be cheap. Buy a solid filter that will do the job.
