Aeration |
Goldfish need a lot of oxygen in the water. The more oxygen in the tank, the more goldfish you will be able to house comfortably, within reason. Having an air stone or some other air-release device can generally raise the number offish you can support by about two for a 10-gallon tank, three for a 20-gallon tank and four for a 30-gallon tank.
Air stones are generally made of porous rock attached at the end of an air hose. The stone gives off tiny bubbles, which aerate the water. You don't want too fine a mist, tiny bubbles are best. Other air releasers are usually made of plastic and are weighted at the bottom. They come as sunken treasure chests, fallen barrels, and old-fashioned underwater divers, there's an amazing assortment to choose from. Remember, you don't want big bubbles racing to the surface. Yon want a steady stream of medium-sized bubbles that take their time going upward, giving them a chance to add oxygen to the water.
These are very important features of any aquarium setup, and I strongly recommend that you have at least one in a 10- or 20-gallon tank, and at least two in a 30-gallon tank or larger.
