Air Pumps |
If you choose an outside or power filter, you need only a small pump to use for an airstone or other device to supply more oxygen to the water.
If you choose a box or an under gravel filter, you will want a more powerful pump so you can easily operate those devices as well as an air stone. Air pumps are left on 24 hours a day. They are never shut off except when you are dismantling the filters or the tank for cleaning. The cost of running an air pump 24 hours a day is negligible.
There are two basic kinds of pumps: diaphragm pumps, which have a vibrating rubber diaphragm, and piston pumps. Both are solid additions to any aquarium; however, while the diaphragm types require no attention, piston pumps do require oiling occasionally. Piston pumps tend to deliver more power, though.
