Frozen or Freeze-dried Foods |
Frozen or freeze-dried foods offer the best of the live world without any of the hassles of growing a culture. They also offer the protection of being disease free. Foods included are brine shrimp, krill (shrimp a little larger than brine), tubifex worms, mosquito larvae, daphnia, and bloodworms. These are a great convenience to the hobbyist who wants to provide variety to his or her fish without having to deal with too much mess.
Table or Household Foods
Table or household foods offer nutritional value and great variety to the goldfish diet. You can offer your goldfish fresh, frozen or canned oysters, clams, mussels, crabmeat, lobster, or bits of raw fish, but no canned tuna fish. Baked or boiled beans, steamed cauliflower or broccoli and boiled or baked potato are all excellent additions as well. Fresh lettuce or spinach is also good. Raw bits of ground beef are especially prized.
These have to be given in moderation, and need to be diced or shredded so that they will be edible for your fish. Don't just throw a shrimp in, it will either sink to the bottom or float, or one of your fish will probably end up choking on it.
Don't offer your fish your table scraps unless they conform to what is listed. Also, no spices. For sure, if you want sick fish, feed them Mexican, French or Italian cuisine. Table food needs to be plain and chopped up. Also, any condiments that you put on your food will be floating around the aquarium and could possibly poison or injure your fish.
